DR Kongo Mask, a wooden mask from the Kongo cultural area, Bakongo origin, dating to ca. 1950–1952, with dimensions 37 cm high by 20 cm wide; condition good with minor signs of age and wear.
Description from the seller
Unusual facial mask from the Congo cultural area, tentatively attributed to the Bakongo. Notable are the elongated face, the narrow eye openings, the geometric incision motifs on the forehead and cheeks, and the open mouth with three-dimensionally carved teeth. Especially striking is the large, disk-shaped hairstyle that extends far backward.
Masks from the Congo cultural area were used in various ceremonial, social, and performative contexts; the specific function of this piece is not documented.
Heavy, darkly patinated wood with wear and lighter areas of use. The deeply hollowed interior shows strong tool marks; along the edge there are mounting openings. 370 × 200 mm.
