Description from the seller
Antique Art Nouveau Wall-Mounted Mail Holder / Newspaper Rack – Copper on Wood – circa 1900
Beautiful and highly decorative antique mail holder (or small newspaper rack) for wall mounting, dating from the heyday of the Art Nouveau/Jugendstil period (circa 1900).
The base of the holder consists of a wooden back panel and wooden inner and side stiles, onto which the copper panels are handcraftedly mounted. The copper fittings feature a stunning, deeply repoussé relief. Both the front plate and the back plate are richly decorated with a typical organic natural motif of blooming poppies, leaves and ears of corn, flowing into one another through graceful whip-like lines.
The holder has the original metal mounting eyes at the top, firmly anchored in the wooden back panel. A beautiful, authentic and functional object for a classic hall or study.
In beautiful, well-worn antique condition. The copper has a lovely dark patina with the usual light oxidation spots in the deeper areas. The wood on the back shows atmospheric signs of age (surface scratches and discoloration over time), but is structurally intact and sturdy throughout. No major dents or cracks in the metalwork. (See the photos for an accurate impression of all sides).
Dimensions:
• Width: 43 cm
• Height: 29 cm
• Depth: 11 cm
• Weight: 825 g
Will, of course, be very carefully packed and shipped with track & trace.
