Réflexions sur la Religion is a French original-language manuscript essay on deist and anticlerical views, two pages long on chiffon paper, measuring 26 x 12.5 cm, bound as a single sheet, unsigned, dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, with the subject Religion and one surviving item.
Description from the seller
Philosophical Essay, a one-page manuscript, recto-verso on rag paper, published at the end of the 18th century, early 19th.
It is a deist and anticlerical critique of revealed religions (in particular Catholicism and Islam), written in the spirit of Enlightenment philosophy and Free Thought. The author rejects Catholic dogma, the pope, priests, and the thesis of the divinity of Jesus Christ or Muhammad, advocating a natural religion centered on the worship of the “Supreme Being.”
There is no precise date, but the nature, the writing, the style, the terminology and the paper indicate that it was written between the end of the revolutionary period and the Restoration, periods marked by lively debates on anticlericalism and free thought.
