Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Denon PMA-850/II, manufactured in 1979, is an excellent, tested and working Japanese 100V integrated amplifier weighing 18 kg with dimensions 434 × 164 × 400 mm and featuring switchable Class A / Class B operation.
Description from the seller
Denon PMA-850/II – High-End Class A / Class B Integrated Amplifier – Japan
Offered is a Denon PMA-850/II, a substantial Japanese integrated amplifier from the late 1970s and the larger model in the PMA-830 / PMA-850 family.
This is the Japanese domestic-market version, designed for 100V AC operation.
The PMA-850/II is particularly interesting for its switchable Class A / Class B operation, which can be selected directly on the amplifier.
Specifications:
* Class B output: 2 × 100 W into 8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, THD 0.01%
* Class A output: 2 × 22 W into 8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, THD 0.005%
* Output at 4 ohms: 2 × 150 W at 1 kHz
* Large toroidal power transformer
* Separate transformer windings for the two channels
* Power-supply filtering: 4 × 10,000 µF
* Dimensions: approximately 434 × 164 × 400 mm
* Weight: approximately 18 kg
Construction is exceptionally substantial. The amplifier has a solid, industrial feel, with aluminium control knobs and a heavy chassis typical of high-end Japanese equipment from this period.
The amplifier is working and sounds excellent. In my experience it has plenty of power reserve and a spacious, detailed and relaxed presentation.
The headphone output is also very good. Connecting headphones does not automatically mute the loudspeakers; the speaker output can instead be switched off manually from the front panel.
Condition
The amplifier is in very good cosmetic condition for its age; please examine the photographs carefully for the exact condition.
It has not been refurbished or restored by me. It currently operates normally, but given its age, no claim is made that the original electronic components have been recently serviced or replaced.
This is an approximately 45-year-old vintage amplifier and should therefore be treated accordingly.
Important: this is the Japanese 100V version, imported directly from Japan in 2021. When used in countries with 220–240V mains electricity, a suitable high-quality step-down transformer is required.
A rare and impressive Denon amplifier, combining serious construction, substantial power reserves and the possibility of genuine Class A operation.
