Info :
Karabakh Azeri antique carpets originate from the Karabakh region in Azerbaijan and are among the most significant Caucasian carpets. They are known for bold natural colors (deep red, blue, ivory), large medallions, floral motifs, and geometric borders.
These carpets are hand-knotted from high-quality sheep’s wool (symmetric knot) and often feature stylized rose or animal motifs. Antique Karabakh carpets are today highly sought-after collectibles that impressively combine traditional craftsmanship with Azerbaijani culture.
Features of a Shirvan carpet:
Pattern: Shirvan carpets are characterized by intricate, symmetric patterns with medallions, stylized blossoms, diamonds, and abstract animal motifs.
Colors: Frequently used colors include red, blue, green, ivory, and yellow, often derived from natural plant and mineral dyes.
Material: These carpets are usually made of hand-spun wool on a cotton or wool warp, giving them a fine, durable texture.
Border: The borders are usually richly adorned with Caucasian symbols, including hook motifs (protective symbols), wavy lines (watermarks), and rosettes.
Meaning & Rarity
Antique Shirvan carpets are very sought after today, as they are among the finest Caucasian carpets. They were produced in small villages, often with individual patterns, which makes every carpet unique. Especially valuable are well-preserved pieces with clear patterning and vibrant natural colors.
This uploaded image shows a classic Shirvan carpet with a typical red field, central medallions, and geometric ornaments. The distinctive edge patterns and fine details speak to a handmade one-of-a-kind piece.
