Specimen: Cothurnocystis elizae (Lower Ordovician, Tremadociense – Fezouata formation) in natural condition, authentic original, weight 322 g, 11 × 10.5 × 1.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Spectacular plate with 2 complete specimens of Cothurnocystis, a primitive and enigmatic echinoderm that lived during the Ordovician. The Cothurnocystis animal had a flat, boot-shaped body and a slender rod-like appendage that could be a stalk or something analogous to a foot or a tail.
The plates contain 2 complete specimens and remains of another. Specimens with this level of preservation are extremely rare. The contrast between the fossils and the matrix is spectacular. The extraordinary preservation allows observing in great detail the delicate structures of Cothurnocystis. A specimen worthy of a museum.
Plastic supports included.
Cothurnocystis measurements: 32 x 15 mm
Matrix 1 measurements: 274 g; 11 x 10.5 x 1.5 cm
Matrix 2 measurements: 48 g; 6 x 5 x 1.5 cm
The Fezouata Formation fossil beds, near the Moroccan town of Zagora, are providing a rich and varied record of fossils with extraordinary preservation, with soft parts or soft-bodied animals often recorded. This type of preservation is similar, albeit later in time, to that of the famous Burgess Shale (Canada).
These fossils date from between 480 and 472 million years ago. Back then Morocco was an ocean and located near the South Pole.
