Rare walnut day-night bedside table in solid walnut with veneered secondary structure, dating to ca. 1880–1900 and attributed to Ebanisteria borghese di fine Ottocento, Umbertine/Renaissance revival style, with a moulded top, a front sliding drawer, an open lower compartment, fluted turned columns on four plinth feet, and overall dimensions 76 cm high, 45 cm wide, 36 cm deep; in good condition with minor age-related marks.
Description from the seller
Splendid bedside table / nightstand in a day-to-night use, a piece of popular bourgeois cabinetmaking in the Umbertine style, manufactured in Northern Italy, dating to the period 1880-1900.
A piece with great character and decorative impact, a typical expression of the eclecticism of the late 19th century that characterized the reign of Umberto I, in which neo-Renaissance and Baroque-inspired motifs are combined, revisited for the high bourgeoisie of the era.
The furniture presents an architectural structure: upper surface with grooved moulded frame, front fascia with a sliding drawer, lower open compartment with an intermediate shelf. The front is punctuated by two substantial turned columns with bobbin-like shapes and overlapping discs, a complex turning executed on the lathe that marks the signature of this production. The columns rest on four fluted plinth feet with a strong sculptural impact.
Of particular value are the two side uprights of the drawer finely hand-carved with a motif of overlapping scales/tiles, a typical Neo-Renaissance repertoire.
Paneled sides with an internal bead moulding. Central knob in patinated brass with a floral rosette decoration, contemporaneous.
Quality cabinetmaking in solid national walnut and walnut veneer over a secondary beech and fir structure, as per the construction practice of the period, visible on the back and on the internal shelf. Original end finish in blackjack lacquer with a beautiful dark brown patina of age
