Description from the seller

Crucified Christ.
Origin: Spain.
Region: Possibly Castile.
Period: Second half of the 19th century (c. 1850–1880).
Material: Carved wood, stuccoed and polychromed.
Style: Neobaroque of Castilian tradition.
Dimensions: 90 × 70 × 15 cm.

An important sculpture of the Crucified Christ made in carved and polychromed wood, conceived to preside over a large-format crucifix or an altarpiece. The image shows a marked inspiration from Spanish Baroque models of the 17th and 18th centuries, with elongated anatomy, head inclined toward the right shoulder, half-closed eyes, and an expression of profound devotion and suffering.

The paño de pureza, with broad folds and tied at the side, follows the Castilian figurative tradition, while the polychromy combines light flesh tones with a delicate treatment of wounds and trickles of blood, aiming for a devotional and naturalistic effect, very characteristic of 19th-century religious production. During the 19th century it was common for numerous Spanish workshops to reinterpret the great Baroque models for churches, chapels, and private oratories.

A museum-quality carving as can be seen in the photos.
