Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, the fifth Umayyad caliph (685-705 AD), stabilized the caliphate after the Second Fitna and centralized Arabic administration. His monetary reforms culminated in purely Islamic coinage in 696-697 AD. Earlier bronze fals, struck in Syria or Palestine, retained Byzantine-influenced imagery: the Standing Caliph with sword and whip, and a transformed cross on steps. Early Kufic inscriptions mark this transitional phase before figural designs gave way to epigraphy.
