Description from the seller

Green guilloché enamel belt buckle in sterling silver with fleurs-de-lis, Mappin & Webb, 1911

Elegant belt or sash buckle made by the prestigious British firm Mappin & Webb, one of the most renowned silver manufacturers in the United Kingdom, with a long history from the 19th century serving high society and the British Royal Household. The piece reflects Edwardian taste of the early 20th century and features a rectangular design with softly rounded corners, central opening for the belt passage, and a double articulated tongue on a crossbar. The reverse is clearly signed 'MAPPIN & WEBB' and preserves the British hallmark stamps, including the lion passant guaranteeing sterling silver and the dateline letter 'n' placing its manufacture in 1911.

It is made in sterling silver and decorated on the front with a splendid translucent green guilloché enamel over a turned engraved (engine-turned) background that creates a subtle wave and depth effect beneath the vitreous layer. Decorative motif includes small gold fleurs-de-lis distributed regularly across the surface, providing a refined chromatic contrast. The reverse, in polished plain silver, reveals the structure with the double functional tongue. Approximate dimensions are 8 cm long by 5 cm high.

The condition is generally good. The guilloché enamel remains vibrant and mostly intact, showing the shine and transparency characteristic of the technique. There are signs of wear and slight loss of gold on the silver edges, oxidation and superficial dark patina, as well as small marks and scratches from use on the back metal, typical of its age. The metal frame shows light marks and the silver requires cleaning, but there are no major chips or significant cracks in the enamel field.

Mappin & Webb pieces in guilloché enamel are highly valued by collectors of silverware and accessories from the Edwardian era. The combination of translucent green enamel with the gold fleurs-de-lis motif, the excellent enamel condition and the signature of a house of such prestige, together with a clear and datable London assay mark from 1911, significantly enhance its appeal and interest. It constitutes a collectible and decorative item that reflects the craftsmanship of British jewelry and silverware of the early 20th century.
