Description from the seller

From: Princess Mononoke

This is an authentic, original, one-of-a-kind Japanese production cel, hand-painted by studio artists and used in the creation of Princess Mononoke, one of Studio Ghibli's most iconic films.

As an original production material, this artwork is entirely unique, representing a tangible piece of traditional Japanese animation history.

The cel captures a memorable scene featuring San alongside the revered boar god Okkoto and Ashitaka. The composition beautifully illustrates the relationship between humanity and the ancient spirits of the forest, a central theme of Princess Mononoke. With its detailed character artwork, dramatic scale, and strong visual storytelling, this piece embodies the artistry and emotional depth that have made the film a timeless classic.

The background is a reproduction (print).

A Certificate of Registration will be included with your purchase.

The artwork has been carefully inspected by our specialists, and its details have been registered in the Japanime Art Gallery Online Archive. After purchase, you can access and verify the archive record at any time by searching for the unique registration number shown on the certificate.

This item is presented interleaved with MicroChamber paper, an archival material used to protect artwork by reducing harmful acids and paint fumes that can damage the cel over time. We are currently the only seller in Japan offering anime cels presented this way.

Please note that this is a vintage production item. Despite careful storage, age-appropriate wear such as light handling marks, minor paint wear, or small imperfections may be present. Buyers are strongly encouraged to examine all images carefully prior to bidding.

Seller's Story

Japanime Art Gallery is a Japan-based art gallery specializing in authentic anime and manga production art and historically significant collectibles. We primarily curate original animation cels, original drawings, and production materials created during the golden era of hand-drawn Japanese animation, from the 1970s to the 1990s. In addition, we carefully select rare posters, official reproduction artworks, reproduction manuscripts, and related materials that represent the history and cultural context of anime and manga. All works offered by Japanime Art Gallery are selected based on our independent curatorial standards, with a strong emphasis on authenticity, historical background, cultural significance, and preservation condition. Even when offering reproduction works, we only handle officially produced, exhibition-related, or limited-distribution items that hold genuine collectable value. Our mission is not simply to sell artworks, but to elevate anime and manga art as a recognized and respected category within the global art market, and to preserve and pass on its cultural value to future generations. We see ourselves as long-term custodians of anime and manga art, responsible for preserving, contextualizing, and introducing these works to the world as cultural and artistic assets.
