Description from the seller
The animated film by De Bommel, "If You Understand What I Mean" from 1983, was the first and is still almost the only full-evening animated feature produced in the Netherlands for both young and old. The main character is Olivier ‘Ollie’ B. Bommel, the popular creation of comic author Marten Toonder. Thanks to the Bommel stories, the Dutch language was enriched with words such as ‘denkraam’ and ‘minkukel’ and with expressions like ‘kommer en kwel’ and ‘If you understand what I mean’. The latter is Bommel’s signature catchphrase and thus an obvious title for the animated film. It had long been Toonder’s dream to bring the dapper, upright bear, who always wears a yellow jacket with a red checked pattern, to life on the screen. He even called cartoons “the pinnacle of the comic.” Nearly three years were spent on the project before the film premiered on February 2, 1983 at the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam.
To make the film a success, the press was thoroughly informed at the beginning of 1983 with the aid of a press pack that could be used without limitation in publications. In newspapers and magazines, the texts, photos, and drawings from that press pack have since been reprinted and viewed in detail. This lot contains such a beautiful original and official press pack for the Bommel film, signed in the bottom right corner.
The press pack offered here includes:
1) A letter in which the premiere is announced and an attachment with information. The editorial staff is asked to give extensive coverage to “this unique animated film.”
2) A sheet with 17 illustrations of Bommel in various poses and a sheet with 14 illustrations of Tom Poes in various poses.
3) A classic print of Bommel, contentedly puffing on his pipe.
4) Three photographs (stills) 8 x 13 cm of scenes from the film. It is likely that the press packs contained (partly) different photos.
5) Photos of the film’s creators, namely Marten Toonder and producer Rob Houwer.
6) An overview of the theatres where the film would be shown.
See also the photos that form part of the description and give a good impression of what is offered.
The wonderful press pack will be securely packed and sent to the new owner by registered mail."
