Description from the seller
Antique Hand-Carved Equestrian Meerschaum Pipe
Late 19th Century to Early 20th Century (circa 1890s–1940s).
• Origin: European (likely Austrian, German, or Turkish craftsmanship).
This is an exquisite example of a vintage figurative tobacco pipe, featuring a high-relief, hand-carved depiction of a galloping horse integrated into the front of the bowl.
The main body of the pipe features a highly detailed equestrian motif. The horse is depicted mid-stride with an active, flowing mane and defined musculature. It rests on a rustic, textured base carved to resemble natural foliage, tree branches, or forest terrain, adding depth and organic contrast to the piece.
The pipe exhibits an authentic, naturally aged appearance. The rich, golden-amber to dark espresso gradient at the rim of the bowl indicates a beautifully developed tobacco patina. This bicolour effect occurs naturally as the porous meerschaum absorbs oils, tars, and nicotine during use, drifting away from its original chalk-white color.
The wooden-toned shank extends cleanly from the base and transitions into a polished silver-toned metal band (ferrule), which acts as a reinforced joint for the mouthpiece.
The pipe is finished with a classic, tapered black saddle stem (mouthpiece) with a very gentle downward curve towards the lip, typical of continental European designs of the
The pipe is in well-preserved condition. The carving retains sharp details, and the body shows no visible cracks or structural damage. The coloration is even and highly desirable among collectors of antique smoking accoutrements,
