Description from the seller

Peter de Smet (1944 - 2003) is one of the most prominent and original humorists in the Dutch comic world, and in 1985 he was awarded the Stripschap Prize. With his characteristic humor and drawing style, he influenced many artists. In 2015 the Stripschap named its audience award for Dutch comic albums after Peter de Smet.

His career as a comic artist took off in 1971 when, on the advice of Jan Kruis, he began publishing in Pep with De Generaal. De Generaal was from the first episode in Pep no. 29 (10-16 July 1971) an immediate hit! Soon his creator found his formula for success. Each episode was built around the same gimmick. The main character, simply called 'De Generaal', wants to seize power, represented by "Het Fort", which is occupied by "De Maarschalk". The general's army consists of one unmotivated soldier and a professor. The professor constantly devises new disguises and vehicles to make the general's master plan a success. Shortly after De Generaal, De Smet launched "Joris P.K", a medieval adventure strip in the style of Peyo's 'Johan en Pierewiet' but to which De Smet added his own quirky humor. Between 1972 and 1974 De Smet drew four stories for Pep of this series, then in 1974-1975 two more for Nieuwe Revu and in 1986 one more for Eppo Wordt Vervolgd in 1986. De Generaal, but especially Joris P.K., are regarded by connoisseurs as one of the Dutch Masterworks.

This lot contains a beautiful, very early, finished page for Joris PK from the early period of Peter de Smet. Very rare work. Ready to be inked. Original, early sketch work Joris PK is extremely rare and is almost never offered. Peter de Smet usually threw away this material. This plate by this virtuoso has thankfully been preserved. Before this beautiful page is offered, it has been in a private collection for more than 45 years. A unique opportunity for the connoisseur.
