Description from the seller

Beautiful Italian patinated 18th-century wooden sculpture of Francis of Assisi.
The young Francis was particularly moved by the suffering of the lepers, who in his time were completely ostracized from society. According to his Testament, God brought him among them and proved his mercy to them. In response, he converted to a life of poverty, prayer and service to the poor, dissatisfied with the emptiness of his life.

Later, in 1205, he had a vision in the little church of San Damiano. He felt addressed by the Crucified depicted there: 'Francis, go and repair my house'. He withdrew like a hermit into solitude and dedicated himself further to the lepers, to repairing churches and to prayer. He himself wished to be the poorest of the poor. He begged for his daily food, sharing it with others who had even less than he. From that moment his only beloved was 'Lady Poverty'.

This statue has the appearance of poverty with which Francis is presented in simplicity by wearing a habit with a rope around the waist.
