Description from the seller

Large antique altar/table crucifix, made entirely by hand in heavy metal with a gilded finish, about 47 cm tall. Circa 1900, attributable to Neogothic / French Troubadour taste.

Handcrafted with fixed and hand-wrinkled riveted pins: The Corpus Christi is anchored to the cross via antique riveted pins hammered into place. At the joints and around the pins the original gilding has worn away with time, revealing the oxidized metal in the dark/black tone typical of ancient works.

The Christ is depicted in a classic yet essential pose: the face and anatomical details show clear signs of aging and the porosity of the melted/hammered metal, with a tactile surface and natural corrosion accumulated over centuries.

On the back of the transverse arm are the letters "J" and "C". The letters are engraved/hammered individually by hand, as reflected by their archaic and asymmetrical form. "J" and "C" stand for Jesus Christus (Jesus Christ in Latin).

The cross features arms ending in star- or leaf-shaped tips and a central rays, supported by a solid hexagonal base.

Overall Condition: Very good considering the object's antiquity. Structurally solid and intact in all major components.

Strong patina with gilding worn at points of greatest contact and the presence of natural oxidation and darkening of the metal. As visible in the close-up photos, one ray/point of the crown of thorns around the head is broken at one point.

Origin and Provenance: France (Neogothic / Troubadour Style)

Material: Heavy gilded metal

Total height: about 47 cm

Cross width: 23 cm

Base: 13.5 x 15.5 cm
