Pompon spent most of his life in the service of other artists. He directed Rodin's workshop from 1890 to 1895, later becoming the assistant to René de Saint-Marceaux until 1916. In search of his own style, he was largely influenced by the rise of Japonisme and his admiration for Egyptian art.
Only at the age of 67 did he rise to fame, with the exhibition of his famous White Bear.
