AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Interesting set of two antique brass camera lenses by the French maker A. Gorde (Paris), mounted on an original wooden stereoscopic lens board (12.8 x 8.2 cm) with flanges from the early Dutch photo trade Guy de Coral & Co. (Amsterdam - Arnhem).

The lenses are mechanically interchangeable on the flanges and both have a manually adjustable diaphragm scale ranging from f/8 to f/64. Although the optics appear very similar and share the same diameter, there are clear physical and textual differences indicating they did not come from the same production run:

• Lens 1 is engraved with: "Rectiligne 6 ½ / 9 - 1e Série - A. GORDE Inc. Opticien PARIS"

• Lens 2 is engraved with: "A. GORDE Ing Opticien PARIS" (without type or series designation).

Additionally, there is a minor physical difference: one lens is approximately 1 millimeter longer than the other, and the thickness of the knurled ring (used to turn the lens out of the flange) varies by a fraction. Because of these differences there is no guarantee that the lenses are optically identical. It is unknown whether this pair was combined by the photo trade at the time, or if the set was later assembled by a collector. The lot is therefore offered explicitly in its current condition ("as is").

Condition report:

• Brass & Engravings: The brass has a beautiful, authentic patina. The handmade engravings are razor-sharp and very legible.

• Glass: The glass is in nice condition for its age.

• Mechanical: The diaphragm rings turn smoothly and without resistance.

• Point to note: As seen in the close-up photo, the iris diaphragm of one of the lenses (Lens 1) no longer closes fully symmetrically. One blade is slightly deformed and requires mechanical adjustment or repair for functional use.

• Woodwork: The wooden lens board shows normal aging and is missing a small piece of wood in the upper right corner (see photos).

A beautiful collectible for lovers of early photography. Properly packed and insured shipping.
