Mask - Dogon - Mali

A large, expressive Dogon mask from Mali, depicting a superimposed crouching female figure; made from relatively heavy hardwood with greyish, weathered surface.;

From a German collection.

On the inside, the horizontal wooden rod – a feature frequently found on Dogon masks – is still intact. It enabled the wearer to hold the mask more securely and stably in front of their face during dances.
