Description from the seller
Beautiful terracotta sculpture of a mother with two children
Created by the Belgian visual artist Paul Du Bois (Aywaille 1859-1938 Uccle)
Belgium, circa 1890
Paul Du Bois was a progressive symbolist artist and is known, among other things, as one of the founders of Les XX in 1883, which also included James Ensor and Fernand Khnopff
Most of his works were made in the Art Nouveau style
This large terracotta statue by Du Bois symbolizes motherhood (maternité), with the unwavering mother carrying a toddler in one hand and nursing a newborn with the other hand. Her abstracted 'incognito' face seems to erase her 'individual' so that the woman is no longer seen as a woman, but as a mother in life.
On the back of the pedestal (against which the woman leans) signed ' PAUL DU BOIS '
Made of terracotta
Dimensions: 42.5 cm high x 17.5 cm length x 13 cm wide
Weight: 3219 grams
Beautiful condition, with some small nicks to the lower edge
Originating from Belgium, circa 1890
The object is packed and shipped with Track&Trace with the utmost care.
