A bronze comb by the Dan people from the Man region, Côte d’Ivoire, 23 cm high, 690 g, sold with stand, in fair condition.
Description from the seller
Dan Bronze Comb - Man Region, Côte d’Ivoire, incl stand.
This intricately crafted comb combines a functional tool with a figurative, almost sculptural design. Five long, gently curved teeth rise from a trapezoidal central section, the surface of which is articulated by horizontal bands, chip-carved patterns, and delicate geometric ornaments. Below, a stylized human lower body with strong, slightly bent legs and meticulously modeled feet forms the handle. Ring-shaped ridges mark the transition between the two elements. The dark brown metal surface, with its golden-brown wear marks, lends the object a warm, naturally occurring patina. The interplay of ornament, human form, and function reveals a remarkable sculptural refinement.
The Dan people live in western Côte d’Ivoire, particularly around Man and Danané, as well as in neighboring Liberia. In their art, representations of the human form and carefully crafted jewelry and prestige objects hold a prominent place. Figurative forms could express beauty, social standing, and personal dignity. The present metal comb can be placed within this aesthetic context. Whether it served as a hair ornament, a ceremonial symbol of dignity, or primarily a representational object remains unclear without a confirmed provenance.
