A wooden sculpture from Benin by the Fon, titled 'A wooden sculpture', provenance Fon Fetish Ensemble – Bohicon/Abomey Region, Benin, 32 cm high, 36 cm deep, 5.6 kg, in fair condition and sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
Fon Fetish Ensemble - Bohicon/Abomey Region, Benin
The multi-part shrine object unfolds from a flat, bowl-shaped base, in the center of which rests a massive, domed form. From this emerges a stylized face with protruding eyes, as well as numerous smaller anthropomorphic figures, wooden rods, and bound elements. The upper section is formed by a complex arrangement of organic materials and rounded, amulet-like shapes. Earthy deposits, dark encrustations, and reddish-brown paint residues cover the entire composition. The boundaries between sculpture, container, and ritual assemblage blur: The object appears less as a finished work of art than as a structure of material relationships that has evolved over a long period.
The Bohicon-Abomey region in southern Benin is part of the historical heartland of the Fon people and their Vodun traditions. There, ritual power objects, often called bocio, are made effective through the combination of carved figures with organic substances, bindings, and offerings. They can serve for protection, healing, or mediation between people and spiritual powers.
Literature (selection):
Suzanne Preston Blier: African Vodun: Art, Psychology, and Power. Chicago 1995.
Melville J. Herskovits: Dahomey: An Ancient West African Kingdom. New York 1938.
Robert Farris Thompson: Flash of the Spirit: African and Afro-American Art and Philosophy. New York 1983.
