Opera glass by the Emil Busch company, Rathenow! Circa 1875.
Biedermeier Historism.
Emil Busch (born August 6, 1820 in Berlin; died April 1, 1888 in Rathenow) was a German industrialist in precision mechanics and optics. He contributed to the invention of the wide-angle lens.
In 1868 Busch was appointed Royal Commercial Counselor by the king for his merits. In 1872 he transformed the company into a joint-stock company to facilitate the necessary investments. This was done with the help of the Quistorp & Co. banking association. The registered capital of the joint-stock company amounted to 275,000 thalers. In the resulting Rathenower Optische Industrie-Anstalt vormals Emil Busch A.-G., Emil Busch thereafter held a high position as a “delegate of the supervisory board” and as a director.
The company subsequently reached a dominant market position. Thanks to unofficial understandings with Zeiss, it constrained free competition. Carl Zeiss had his son Roderich undertake commercial training at Busch. Busch, who never studied, contributed a report that led the state to grant Zeiss’s glass-technical laboratory a subsidy of 35,000 thalers. Busch, who died in 1888, helped make Rathenow synonymous with high-quality optical devices, due in part to him and to Johann and Eduard Duncker.
The theater glass shines with its excellent preserved condition.
