Description from the seller

Chiseled and gilded wooden gloria crown (gloria), completely in wood. Around a central disc with a rounded top, alternating straight faceted rays and wavy flame-like rays surround it. At the bottom there is a peg and in the disc a rectangular notch to attach the crown to a statue or altarpiece. The exact original purpose is not known.

The crown is in its original wooden transport chest. It has a pink cotton lining, fixed with nails, and cotton ribbons to secure the crown. Also two hinges, iron hasps and iron handles.

On the lid there is a printed shipping label: "Ornements d'Église – A. Denis, 125 Rue du Midi, Bruxelles / 24 rue de Paris, Tournai", with two instances of "Fragile". Handwritten reads: "N° 641 – Envoi du 5 juin 1908 – Tarif 1". The shipment was addressed to "Monsieur l'Abbé …, Révérend Curé à …", "à station Jabbeke" (West Flanders). The names are partly illegible; the parish is presumably Stalhille. In the corner it says "2 colis". On the lid there are remnants of a wax seal.

It is rare that a church ornament has survived together with its original case and a dated supplier shipping label.

Condition

• The gilding is worn and rubbed, with a dark patina and small losses.
• On the peg and in the notch there is dark paint, and in the notch there are handwritten marks.
• The lining is discolored, stained and has red spots. The ribbons are discolored and frayed.
• The label edges are torn and have water stains.
• No restorations are known.
• The photos are part of the description.
