Description from the seller
Old wrought iron key with a box-type lock (original mechanism dismantled) - 1600
Antique wrought iron lock paired with its key. The lock consists of a curved-profile plate with two hammered brackets with round-headed rivet bosses, with a keyhole in the center and a cylindrical tube (fixed barrel) on which the key slides. The inner mechanism is visible, with multiple rings and overlapping reels inside a sheet metal frame, allowing us to understand how the lock worked.
The key has a bean-shaped (reniform) bow, a shaft with a multi-ring collar, and a perforated ingot work stem with a Greek key and crosses. As the lock is wrought iron, it features artisanal workmanship and riveting.
This is an interesting ensemble for collectors of antique locks and mechanisms. In terms of shape and craftsmanship it is datable indicatively to the 17th century.
