Description from the seller
Carlo Alessi - Bombè Linea
Splendid set for serving tea or coffee produced by Alessi, ideal for design lovers.
The set consists of a sugar bowl, a milk jug, and a teapot, made in high-quality steel and thermoplastic resin.
Defined by Alessandro Mendini as "the symbolic object of Alessi's production", the Bombé service has a curious origin: Carlo Alessi designed it for his engagement to Germana Bialetti, daughter of the inventor of the Moka. During courtship, in the Bialetti home they used to sip tea under the watchful eye of the future mother-in-law. Thus, when he asked for Germana's hand, he thought of giving a bombé service, like the family one, but in a material more modern than porcelain. A tribute to his fiancée... and perhaps also a shrewd move to win over the father-in-law.
Born in Granerolo (Verbania) in 1916, he studied technical drawing at the OMAR Institute in Novara, entering at a very young age the metal household goods workshop founded by his father Giovanni in 1921. From the mid-1930s he designed for about a decade many of Alessi's objects, including the 'Ottagonale', 'Scalini', 'Cilindrica' series and the famous 'Bombé', still in production. In the 1950s he became general manager of the company, giving it an international dimension and opening it to collaboration with external designers. He was president of Alessi S.p.A. until July 2009, the date of his passing.
All objects are in good condition, with minor signs of wear. The photographs reflect the actual conditions of the objects.
