Russian Orthodox brass icon of Christ Pantocrator – 19th century
Russian Orthodox brass icon of Christ Pantocrator, one of the most important and recognizable depictions within Orthodox Christian iconography.
Description
Christ is depicted frontally with a cruciform halo around his head. With his right hand he makes the traditional blessing gesture, while in his left hand he holds an open gospel book.
On both sides of Christ are Cyrillic and traditional Christological inscriptions. The depiction is carved in high relief and is surrounded by a broad, profiled frame.
At the top there are two protruding mounting points, which may indicate that the icon originally formed part of a larger composite icon or travel icon.
