Description from the seller
Splendid mixed lot of 5 antique service and dessert dining utensils (circa 1880).
The lot consists of five vintage pieces finely worked, featuring handles in 800 silver and functional parts in precious natural horn, heat-treated (variants in blonde horn and dark horn). The handles bear the punch mark "800".
Being an attractive mixed set (a vintage "mix and match"), the objects display different decorative styles that attest to the transition from the late 19th-century Eclectic/Historist taste to the sinuous lines of early Art Nouveau.
Lot composition:
1. Fish knife (highlight item): Blade entirely in horn, enhanced by a refined scrimshaw-like engraving depicting a darting fish and aquatic floral motifs in Liberty/Art Nouveau style. Asymmetric handle decorated with floral tendrils.
2. Salad service pair: Composed of a large fork and a spoon in dark horn. The coordinated handles are richly chased with vertical grooves and foliate motifs.
3. Fruit/cheese knife: Blade in blonde horn, handle in late-Imperial/Neoclassical style with die-cutting grooves, interlaced ribbon, and lower oval medallion.
4. Single serving/lettuce spoon: Made in blonde horn, paired with a silver handle in a sober, fluid design with broad ribs (early 20th century).
Physical details and specifications:
- Condition: In good overall condition, used with small signs of age and natural silver oxidation that preserve its historical patina. The natural horn is solid and free of hairline cracks.
- Age: Circa 1880 (late 19th century).
- Materials: 800 silver, silver-plated, and natural horn.
- Origin: Europe.
- Dimensions: Maximum length 29 cm, width 4.5 cm, depth 2 cm.
- Gross total weight: 318 g.
- Colors: Silver, dark brown, amber/translucent shades (blonde horn).
