Description from the seller
It is a chest that clearly displays the decorative Neo-Gothic of the 19th century, that taste for recreating medieval aesthetics with a mix of fantasy, artisanal precision, and a theatrical sense. The structure, compact and raised on claw-footed legs, conveys from the first glance a nearly architectural presence: it is not just a box, but a small domestic reliquary, an object designed to guard and, at the same time, to fascinate.
The body is covered with ornate reliefs worked with meticulous care: tracery, arabesques, stylized vegetal motifs, and small geometries that recall the moldings of Gothic temples reinterpreted by the historicist workshops of the 19th century. Each face of the chest seems to tell a micro-visual history, with a decorative rhythm that plays with light and shadow thanks to the deep modeling of the metal.
At the apex, crowning the lid, a protective gargoyle rises, modeled with that elegant drama characteristic of the Neo-Gothic. Its presence turns the piece into something more than a container: a symbolic guardian, a sculptural finial that adds verticality and a touch of medieval mystery.
The state of conservation is excellent: the antique patina enhances the metal’s nobility and the reliefs remain crisp. Only one of the hinges requires a simple restoration, a minor detail that does not affect the integrity or the aesthetics of the whole and can be resolved without invasive intervention.
In short, a high-quality 19th-century Neo-Gothic chest, rich in details, with a gargoyle acting as a visual signature and with all the narrative force of historicist objects.
Certified shipping and careful packaging.
