Iron garden planter, Florentino model, of French origin, dating 1850–1900, with height 22 cm, width 14 cm and depth 14 cm, in good used condition and featuring decorative striations in the neoclassical style.
Description from the seller
Due to its morphology, this piece is closer to an Italian neoclassical or Florentine Renaissance taste reinterpretated in the nineteenth century than to the authentic historical Florentine style. The ribbed cup shape, the circular foot, and the absence of exuberant ornamentation recall models of garden kraters and vessels inspired by Antiquity, very popular during the nineteenth-century historicism.
Planter or small ornamental garden cup made of wrought and cast iron during the nineteenth century, conceived following neorenaissance models of Italian inspiration. The piece features an elegant flared body traversed by pronounced vertical striations that emphasize its height and slenderness, culminating in a softly undulated edge that adds dynamism to the silhouette. The lower part is articulated through a beaded zone that links to a short central pedestal and a wide circular base, providing stability and visual balance to the ensemble.
The surface preserves traces of its old polychromy or gilt finish, now transformed by the passage of time into an attractive patina where ochre tones, golds, and soft oxidations coexist, enriching its historical character. These signs of use and aging give the piece an authenticity especially appreciated in garden decorative elements and landscape architecture of the nineteenth century.
Its sober and harmonious design finds parallels in productions inspired by Florentine Renaissance models, reinterpretated during the historicist period for the ornamentation of terraces, galleries, greenhouses, and gardens of bourgeois residences and country houses. The purity of its lines, combined with the nobility of the worked iron, makes this planter an elegant example of exterior decorative arts, capable of integrating into both classical and eclectic environments.
Beyond its function as a plant container, the piece has a marked sculptural presence, evoking the small ornamental urns that decorated Italian and French gardens of the nineteenth century. Its balanced proportion, the strength of its ribbed modeling, and the beauty of its historic patina make it an attractive testament to the neorenaissance taste that characterized much of European decoration of the era.
