Solid wood travel chest from Italy, dating roughly 1880–1930 in a rustic style, 35 x 26 x 20 cm, with a slightly domed lid, a front wrought-iron latch lock, and decorative metal studs along the upper edges; used in good condition with minor signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
This solid wood chest stands out for its characteristic slightly domed lid, a front latch lock in wrought iron, and decorative metal studs along the upper edges. The design recalls classic rustic travel chests or the small pirate chests used to hold personal items.
A solid wood chest with these features and hardware finishes is best placed in a period spanning from the late 19th century to the early 20th century (circa 1880–1930).
The hardware and closure: The shaped front lock and the iron side handles are typical of artisanal production from the late 19th century or early 20th century. The dark patina on the metal indicates natural oxidation over time.
The decorative studs: The arrangement of round-headed studs along the margins of the upper bulge historically served both to fasten the wooden boards to the internal structure and as a protective reinforcement for travel, an aesthetic still very popular through the 1920s and 1930s.
