AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

FRANCE. Bayonne. 5 Francs. 1823 L. Louis XVIII (1814-1824)

- Value: 5 Francs.
- Reign: Louis XVIII (1814-1824).
- Year: 1823.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: LOUIS XVIII ROI DE FRANCE · MICHAUT F. Reverse: 5 F · 1823 · L, with Bourbon shield of three fleurs-de-lis crowned and surrounded by a laurel crown.
- Grading: MS63 (NGC).

Silver 5 Francs coin minted in Bayonne during the reign of Louis XVIII, in the period of the French Bourbon Restoration. The obverse features the monarch's bare bust facing left, with the hair carefully modeled and gathered by a ribbon at the back, following the neoclassical style characteristic of early 19th‑century French issues. Beneath the portrait appears the signature of the engraver Auguste-François Michaut, not Pierre-Joseph Tiolier, who was responsible for the design.

The reverse shows the France shield with three fleurs-de-lis, crowned and surrounded by an elegant laurel crown, accompanied by the face value, the date and the letter L, corresponding to the Bayonne mint.

The specimen displays excellent relief definition, especially in the hair, the fleurs-de-lis, and the decorative elements of the shield, with fields of silvery-grey tone, soft patina nuances, and preserved original luster. Light surface marks compatible with its MS63 grade are observed, maintaining an attractive strike quality and notable visual presence.

Piece certified by NGC, representative of the revival of French monarchical symbolism after the Napoleonic period and of the large-format silver issues of the Restoration.
