Description from the seller
SPAIN. Madrid. 5 Pesetas. 1896. Alfonso XIII (1886-1931)
- Value: 5 Pesetas.
- Reign: Alfonso XIII (1886-1931).
- Year: 1896.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: ALFONSO XIII POR LA G. DE DIOS · 1896. Reverse: REY CONST. DE ESPAÑA · 5 PESETAS · PLUS ULTRA.
- Grade: AU53 (GBCA).
5-peseta silver coin featuring a child portrait of Alfonso XIII looking to the left, in a realistic style characteristic of late 19th-century issues during the Regentship of María Cristina. The reverse presents the crowned shield of Spain between the Pillars of Hercules with ribbons bearing the motto PLUS ULTRA, a heraldic-strong composition with excellent visual balance. The specimen shows moderate wear at the highest points of the portrait and the shield, in line with AU53, still preserving abundant details in the hair, the crown and the quarters of the shield. The fields show numerous marks of circulation and fine superficial scratches typical of its commercial use, yet maintaining an attractive residual mint luster and a pleasant natural silvery tone. This piece belongs to one of the most emblematic series in Spanish numismatics, minted during the early years of Alfonso XIII’s effective reign and representative of the monetary system of the Restoration.
