Antique silver saliera in the form of a small tripod cauldron, with three Pontifical coins from 1867 featuring Pius IX, weighing 29 g.
Description from the seller
Ancient silver salt cellar in a cauldron shape with 3 coins Pontifical State Pope Pius IX 1867 - 29g
Splendid and rare desktop art and antiques piece from the second half of the 19th century. This is a salt cellar (or spice holder) in worked silver, shaped as a small tripod cauldron, enhanced by the coordinated inlay of three important Pontifical numismatic testimonies from the same year (1867).
The body of the piece is decorated with beaded finishes on the upper edges and is supported by three spherical bulbous feet. It features two movable ring-shaped handles. The interior of the basin preserves the original and elegant gold finish in contrast.
Numismatic Details (The Coins inserted):
The three visible faces show the complete and coordinated series of the 5 Soldi of 1867 in silver (equal to 25 centesimi of the Pontifical Lira) issued under the 22nd year of Pope Pius IX’s pontificate (Pius IX Pontifex Maximus):
• Side 1: The reverse of the coin with the central inscription 5 SOLDI 1867 enclosed in a crown of laurel and oak, topped by the inscription STATO PONTIFICIO.
• Side 2: The obverse of the coin showing the crisp, detailed profile of Pope Pius IX facing left, with the Latin legend PIVS IX PON. MAX. A. XXII.
• Side 3: The official heraldic coat of arms of the Mastai-Ferretti family (Pio IX) topped by the tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter, surrounded by the legend PIVS IX PON. MAX. AN. XXII.
Specifications and Condition:
• Era: Circa 1867 - Late 19th Century
• Material: Silver structure (pontifical coins in 835‰ silver) with gilded interior.
• Total weight: 29 grams
• Conditions: Excellent vintage condition. The item has not undergone aggressive chemical polishing in order to preserve the magnificent and genuine patina of time, highly valued by numismatic collectors. No invasive soldering or structural deformation.
Tracked shipping and professional, careful packaging to guarantee the piece's integrity. Available to provide further photos or details on request.
