Effigie del Porto di Centocelle oggi Civitavecchia come di presente si trova riedificato da Sommi Pontefici, by Carlo Fontana / Pietro Santi Bartoli, Mediterranean Sea, Rome area, etching with hand-colouring on handmade paper, 16 x 40.5 cm, condition: good, extremely rare.
Description from the seller
Effigy of the Port of Centocelle, today Civitavecchia, as of present it is shown rebuilt by the Supreme Pontiffs.
View of the Trajanic port of Centum Cellae (whose construction was entrusted by the Spanish emperor, ever sensitive to great urban works, to the great engineer Apollodorus of Damascus), repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, to such an extent that the title pays homage to the commitment of the Papal States in support of its revival, also economic, aimed at making it the principal maritime and military outpost of its navy.
The engineer Carlo Fontana, on behalf of Innocenzo XII, produced an imposing tableau entitled "Veduta de nuovi aquedotti di Civitavecchia delineata dal Cavalier Carlo Fontana Ingegniere e data in luce nel corrente anno 1699", engraved by the Umbrian Pietro Santi Bartoli and composed of several views aimed at illustrating the works of port enlargement, with the installation of new conduits and fountains: our beautiful view is an integral part of it.
Dim.: 16x40,5 cm
