Square silver presentation plate by the Delft master Dirk van de Goorberg, Delft, Netherlands, in .934 silver, dated 1766, weighing 465 g and measuring 24 × 24 cm with a height of 5 cm, in good used condition with minor signs of wear and small stains, bearing Delft city marks and the early DG mastermark.
Description from the seller
A spectacular centerpiece with museum-grade appeal: from this specific square presentation plateau by the renowned Delft master Dirk van de Goorberg, globally only two other examples are known, one of which is a larger sister piece housed in the Rijksmuseum’s permanent collection in Amsterdam.
Art Historical Context & Extreme Rarity
Dirk van de Goorberg (admitted to the guild in 1747) was an absolute authority within Delft silversmithing, where he also served as an official. Although his oeuvre is broadly documented in the professional literature (such as in Dutch Silver by J.W. Fredericks), platters and cabarets are almost entirely absent from standard overviews.
This particular example hails from his early, most coveted artistic period (the heyday of Dutch Rococo). The status of this specific design is underscored by the fact that, besides this piece, only two other platters from his hand are known, including the larger piece in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Van de Goorberg objects have in the past also been part of the prestigious collection of A.C.R. Dreesmann.
Description and Style
This square plateau rests on four elegantly cast feet and is executed in a rich Louis XV style (Rococo). The edge is characteristically molded and enriched with the flowing scroll-and-flame motifs that are a hallmark of Van de Goorberg. The early dating around 1766 is irrefutably confirmed by the early master mark, which at this period was still stamped simply as 'DG,' without the colon that appears on his later works.
Specifications & Hallmarks
The object bears a complete, pristine, authentic set of Delft guild marks:
City Mark: The Delft coat of arms (the shield with the vertical stripe).
Master Mark: DG (the early stamp of Dirk van de Goorberg, without colon).
Date Letter: n (1766).
Assay Mark: Hollandse Leeuw Passant (First-grade silver, .934).
