Description from the seller

Chinese Rose Family (Famille Rose) Porcelain Vase with Sculpted Knot-Form Handles and Seal - Republic Period (1912-1949) - Height 35 cm

We are pleased to present at auction this magnificent Chinese porcelain vase from the Famille Rose Family, dating to the Republic Period (1912-1949). The vase features a classic form with an ovoid body, a long neck, and a slightly flared mouth, adorned with elegant knot-form sculpted handles representing longevity (Shu) and coiled ribbons, painted with colored enamels.

The body of the vase is decorated with a vivid hand-painted narrative scene in Famille Rose enamels. It depicts literati and sages (likely the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove or similar scenes of scholarly life) in a natural landscape. A bearded scholar, seated beneath an ancient pine and a maple, discusses with a young attendant while consulting a scroll. The scene is rich in detail, from the intricate patterns of their robes to the stratified rocks and carefully rendered foliage. The back of the vase shows additional figures in a landscape, maintaining the same high painting quality.

The base of the vase bears a four-character seal impressed in red iron (zhuanshu), attributing the piece to the Republic period. The foot is unglazed around the base, revealing the fine porcelain paste.
