Description from the seller
RARE RELIEF-SCULPTED STONE STELE - SHIVA AND PARVATI
Rare and superb stone stele carved in relief.
Relief depicting Shiva in a rare form: Uma Mahesvara (the divine couple) in black stone, representing Shiva seated in lalitasana, embracing Parvati.
This superb stele features the Hindu god Shiva in his Umāmahēśvaramūrti aspect. (this iconography is described in two texts: Viṣṇudharmōttara and Rūpamaṇḍana Rao, 1971, vol. II, Part I, p. 132). It represents Śiva and his wife, called in this context Umā, the “Favorable,” seated on a single seat, showing signs of attachment and often surrounded by their children and attendants.
Shiva is in a relaxed pose, gently embracing his wife. The two gods seem to look at each other; the finesse of the modelling hints at their tender expression. Shiva holds in one of his hands his principal attribute, the trident. They are clothed in dhoti and their bodies are richly adorned with necklaces and various ornaments.
The two deities are not alone: at their feet, beneath the lotus-throne, stand two familiars: the buffalo Nandi and the lion, mounts of the two deities respectively.
The stele is mounted on a wooden base.
Hindu art, India, Pala Dynasty — 9th/10th century.
