Set of six Art Nouveau bentwood wooden chairs from Italy, produced circa 1930–1940 by Antonio Volpe in Udine.
Description from the seller
Set of six Authentic antique bentwood chairs manufactured by the historic Italian firm Società Anonima "Antonio Volpe" based in Udine, Italy, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
Antonio Volpe founded the company in Udine around 1883, initially acting as one of the first regional retailers for the legendary Austrian company Gebrüder Thonet. When Thonet’s steam-bending patents expired, Volpe began manufacturing its own high-quality bentwood pieces in Italy, heavily challenging the prominent Austrian manufacturers like Thonet and J&J Kohn.
The standout feature is the beautifully embossed/impressed art motif explicitly pressed into the wood of both the curved backrest panel and the seat surface, adding a decorative character to their otherwise lightweight construction. This technique was popularized during the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil era.
Underneath the seat, these models traditionally bear the hot-iron brand mark "VOLPE UDINE". Volpe chairs are celebrated by collectors for their flawless, high-tier wood-bending execution (typically utilizing European beechwood) without fracturing the grain.
They are in very great original condition, showing some scratches, natural wood cracks and some small defects (seen on photos), consistent with age and use.
Presented of moth holes (seen on photos), preferred to be treated for the better use.
Measurement:
Width 40cm x Height 88cm x Depth 46 cm x seat height 47.5cm
Made in Udine, Italy.
Period: 1930s/1940s
