Pair of hand-carved dark wood sculptures from China representing Shou Lao, with no signature, dating to the first half of the 20th century, each 42.5 cm high, 15 cm wide and 12.5 cm deep, together weighing about 5 kg, in discrete condition; materials are wood, and the figures feature a central top hole for potential lamp use.
Description from the seller
Refined and imposing pair of hand-carved dark solid wood Chinese sculptures, finely patinated. The figures depict the revered longevity deity Shou Lao (Shouxing), characterized by the high, swollen forehead, long beard, and a smiley benevolent expression.
Subject and Iconography: Both figures hold the knotted staff, the fruits of longevity (immortality peaches), and ceremonial vases on the summit. The sculptures are also designed as lamp stands or candelabra (presence of the central top hole for housing).
Details and Carving: Great visual impact and dynamism, with richly draped garments and integrated pierced bases that simulate rocks and roots typical of Chinese sculptural tradition.
Marks: On the summit of the sculptures there are numbers/characters incised in the recess.
Origin: China
Era: First half of the 20th century (Republic / circa 1920-1940)
Dimensions (each):
Height: 42.5 cm
Width: 15 cm
Depth: 12.5 cm
Total weight: about 5 kg for the pair
Conditions: Good overall structural and patina conditions. Noted natural cracks in the wood due to drying over time (particularly on one shoulder/back and the base, as clearly shown in the close-up photos).
