Description from the seller
Egypt 1903 - Large Collection of 26 Orientalist Postcards (11 Used + 15 New) - Coherent Lot
Extraordinary and unique set of 26 vintage postcards from Egypt (Colonial/Orientalism era), entirely assembled and dated on the exact same day: March 24, 1903.
This collection constitutes an intact historical-postal archive of exceptional coherence. It tells the voyage of a European visitor between Cairo, Luxor, and Port Said.
Lot Composition (26 Pieces Total):
• Lot 1: 11 Used Postcards (Postal History). Shipped in a block on March 24, 1903 from the Port-Said post office. Each piece is franked with the original "Postes Egyptiennes" 1 Millieme stamp (Sphinx and Pyramids), canceled by the era's sharp bilingual circular postmark.
• Lot 2: 15 New/Unsent Postcards. Saved by the traveler as a memento. Exceptional historical note: two postcards bear on the front the original handwritten ink annotations of the era reading "Cairo 24-3-903" and "At the pyramids of the Pharaohs 24-3-903", definitive confirmation of the dating of the entire archive.
Publishers and Fine Subjects:
The lot includes a vast section of the sought-after Framed Lobed Ornamental Artistic Series / Moorish Arch (with contemporaneous serial numbers between 824 and 880), as well as prestigious editions signed by renowned photographers and printers of the era such as Carlo Mieli (Alexandria) — including a splendid color multi-photo view of Port Said —, J. Barbier (on a cliché by the court photographer Max Dittrich) and Lichtenstern & Harari.
• Main subjects: Lively scenes and costumes (Arabic cafés, street musicians, readers of the Quran, water bearers and sellers, Fellah farmers), interiors of mosques (Qaitbay) and prayer scenes, rooms and exhibitions of mummies at the Cairo Museum, and grand archaeological/urban views (Karnak, Thebes’ Ramesseum, Cairo Citadel, Ghezireh Palace).
Condition:
Very Good / Excellent for age (1903). Sound card stock, with no rips or missing pieces, showing the typical and fascinating uniform browning of the period at the edges which confirms authenticity. Writings and postal marks perfectly legible.
