Vallauris ceramic vase Écume de Mer, designed by Atelier Le Cyclope, France, dating to 1950–1970.
Description from the seller
The shown vase is French artistic mid-century pottery, produced in the renowned pottery region of Vallauris on the Côte d'Azur. The style flourished notably in the 1960s and 1970s
1. Écume de Mer (Sea Foam): This refers to the roughly textured, porous outer glaze in turquoise, black and white. The foam or volcanic texture was achieved by adding chemical foaming agents to the glaze. During firing in the kiln, the glaze boiled and formed bubbles, which after cooling left the characteristic craters.
2. Émaux du Cyclone (Cyclone Glaze) or Cyclope: This refers to the striking, thick drops of bright red or orange glossy glaze in the center. It creates a deliberate, modernist contrast between the rough, matte exterior and the mirror-smooth, organic core.
