Spirit of Africa Auction

Funerary terracotta heads from the Akan cultural area (Ghana Ivory Coast), also known as Nsodie or mma, were placed on mounds and tombs of chiefs or noble deceased during commemorative rites. Made of terracotta (baked clay), sometimes with dark or earthy glazes, they visually recall stone or lava. The period of these rites stretches from the 16th century to the early 20th century with the arrival of missionaries.

This piece is damaged and repaired non-professionally but remains a very interesting and rare item.
