Historic-artistic description

Ancient episcopal mitre belonging to the tradition of Catholic liturgical vestments, characterized by an ivory-colored textile background and a rich embroidered decoration with floral and vegetal motifs, ornamental scrolls and details in gold tones.

The surface presents an elaborate decorative composition, enriched by colorful inserts in red, green, blue and translucent shades. The edges are finished with red-magenta textile details.

The mitre retains the two pendants (infule), decorated with coordinated motifs and finished with ornamental fringes. The overall appearance has a representative character typical of vestments intended for solemn liturgical celebrations.

The object is accompanied by its shaped case, considered original by the owner, with a rigid structure and inner padding. The presence of the case constitutes an element of interest for collectors of sacred art and historic ecclesiastical vestments.

Historical context

The typology and decorative repertoire can be compared with historical European episcopal mitres, including those Italian ones documented in 19th-century historical-art catalogs. No labels, signatures or identifying marks have been identified.

Condition

The mitre shows signs of aging and wear compatible with its nature as a historic textile artifact. The lining and inner padding of the case are notably deteriorated.

It is recommended to carefully examine all photographs to assess the condition of the fabric, embroidery, decorative inserts, fringes and the case.

The mitre and its related case are offered together as a single lot for collection, of interest to enthusiasts of sacred art, historical textiles and liturgical objects.
