Alessi – Aldo Rossi, Michael Graves & King-Kong – Collection of 4 Italian design icons – La Cupola 9095, Graves 9096/9097 and Girotondo
Important set of four original Alessi objects, representing some of the most significant collaborations in the history of the Italian company and of postmodern design from the late eighties and the following years.
The lot includes works designed by Aldo Rossi, Michael Graves and the King-Kong duo (Stefano Giovannoni and Guido Venturini).
The objects come from the same private collection and show varying condition levels, detailed for each piece.
1. Alessi “La Cupola” 9095 – Aldo Rossi
Designer: Aldo Rossi

Year of design: 1988
One of the most famous coffee makers designed for Alessi by Aldo Rossi and one of the most recognizable expressions of his architectural language applied to domestic objects.
The name “La Cupola” directly evokes the architectural form that characterizes the upper part of the object. Rossi thus transforms the traditional coffee maker into a small domestic architecture, in keeping with a typical approach of his design research.
The piece presented is identified by the original Alessi documentation/label as model 9095 La Cupola.
Conditions
Unopened specimen and in exceptionally good preserved condition.
The coffee maker shows no evident signs attributable to normal use. Body, spout, handle and knob are well preserved.
Particularly interesting is the presence of the original Alessi documentation/label, kept with the object and included in the lot.

Designer: Michael Graves
Manufacturer: Alessi, Italy
Model: 9097

It is one of the most characteristic objects of the successful collaboration between Alessi and the American architect Michael Graves, a central figure of international Postmodernism.
The design combines geometric forms, chromatic elements and references to Art Deco and American popular culture. Alessi itself regards the objects in this family as internationally recognized design icons of the Eighties and Nineties.
The specimen features the characteristic dark body, two blue/turquoise arched handles with pinkish connecting elements, the lid with a spherical knob and its original Alessi spoon.
Completeness is particularly important: Alessi separately identifies also the replacement lid 9097/CO and the spoon 9097CUCCHI.

3. Alessi 9096 – Creamer Michael Graves
Designer: Michael Graves
Manufacturer: Alessi, Italy
Model: 9096
Type: creamer/milk jug
Materials: stainless steel 18/10 and thermoplastic
The creamer belongs to the same design family as the sugar bowl 9097 and borrows its characteristic formal and chromatic vocabulary.
The bulging body is completed by the distinctive arched turquoise handle, with small pinkish connector elements, while the spout creates a strong geometric contrast with the softness of the body.
Alessi describes the 9096 as one of the projects in the great family of objects conceived by Michael Graves, where influences of Art Deco, Pop Art and the language of cartoons converge. The version currently marketed is in stainless steel 18/10 and PA and is made in Italy.
Conditions
It is the only one of the three small service pieces that shows evident signs of time and use.
Surface alterations and marks on the exterior finish and signs of use inside are visible. These characteristics are clearly documented in the photographs.
The object remains complete and structurally intact: handle, decorative elements and spout are present.
No restoration work has been performed.

Model: Girotondo AKKGT
Type: large round tray
Material: 18/10 stainless steel polished to a mirror finish
Diameter: about 40 cm, as documented photographically
Year production began: 1989
Girotondo is probably one of the most immediately recognizable graphic motifs in Alessi’s recent history.
The wide edge is decorated with the sequence of the famous stylized little figures, created by architects Stefano Giovannoni and Guido Venturini under the name King-Kong.
Alessi officially notes 1989 as the start year of Girotondo production and identifies the model with code AKKGT. It is made of 18/10 stainless steel polished to a mirror finish and produced in Italy.
The motif of the little figures was so successful that Alessi later used it for an entire family of home and office objects.
Conditions
Good vintage condition.
The tray is complete and shows no evident structural deformations. The characteristic perforated edge is intact.
The surface shows micro-scratches, normal signs of use and some superficial halos/stains, particularly visible in the central area.
The tray requires a conservative cleaning of the steel; however, it has not undergone aggressive polishing in order to preserve its original surface.
The Alessi logo is still present.
Photographs, including close-ups, are an integral part of the condition description.
