Description from the seller
Antique Catholic Liturgical Set – Thurible, Navicula incense boat, Aspergillum tub with Aspergil – Neo-Style – circa 1900, possibly slightly earlier.
Beautiful, very complete and richly decorated set of Catholic church utensils (devotionalia) from the late 19th or early 20th century, for incense service. The objects feature refined floral and classical relief decorations in Neo-Style.
This unique composition consists of:
- Large Thurible (Thuribulum): Equipped with the original hanging chains and a beautifully openwork lid for the smoke to escape. In this is placed smoldering charcoal and incense grains to spread the smoke.
- Accompanying Navicula incense boat: In the characteristic boat shape with a hinged lid, standing on an elegant foot. Featuring a maker’s mark on the interior. In this boat-shaped box with a flip lid the stock of incense grains is kept. Here on the inside is a mark (a letter or stamp 'P'). This may indicate the maker, a tin alloy ('Peltro' / 'Plated'), or a city mark. Given the shine and oxidation, the set appears to be made of silvered brass/brass or high-quality white metal.
- Aspergillum bucket with water brush (Aspergil): An elegantly formed and richly decorated bucket with a worked pivoting hook, including the accompanying heavy water brush with the perforated ball at the end and with a finely detailed handle. The priest sprinkles the water over the faithful or objects with this.
- Godslamp: A hanging fixture including the authentic deep red glass that, in church tradition, symbolizes the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. In church this lamp is always lit near the tabernacle.
Material: Silver-plated metal / white metal (very beautiful luster and patina, see detail photos for the mark on the boat).
Period: ca. 1900 (possibly slightly earlier).
Condition: In good, authentic condition with normal aging and usage marks that contribute to the historical character. No major dents. The chains and hinges function properly.
A rare opportunity to acquire such a complete and harmonious liturgical set, perfect for collectors of religious art and antiques.
