Six antique walking canes dating from around 1960–1970, made in Portugal from solid woods of various varieties, with five curved handles and one Derby-style ergonomic ‘T’ handle, each about 89–92 cm long, in good used condition with signs of age and patina.
Description from the seller
Mid-Century (c. 1950 - 1980). These are handcrafted, traditional pieces from the mid-20th century. The patina accumulated on the varnish, natural wear at the points where the handles are touched, and the classic transitional design (such as the Derby-style cane with a brass ring) place this lot in the golden era of walking cane manufacturing.
Types of Wood Incorporated in the Lot:
By analyzing the grain, nodes, and tones through the images, the lot shows excellent botanical diversity:
1. Chestnut Wood (Castanea sativa): A very traditional wood, light and highly resistant to bending. Present in the cane with a mid-brown finish and a perfectly curved grip by heat (sapwood).
2. Rustic Cane / Bamboo Wood (Calamus / Bambusoideae): Identifiable in the cane with the characteristic successive knots along the shaft and flame-grained handle (artificially burned to create dark aesthetic marks).
3. Cherry or Patinated Beech Wood: Used in the cane with geometrically carved decorations at the base of the grip. Features concentric rings engraved and fine veins ideal for artistic woodworking.
4. Exotic Wood / Rosewood (or similar dark dense tone): The cane with an ergonomic in a "T" grip (Derby type) features a wood of higher density, dark red/chocolate hue, and high durability.
5. Knobby Rustic Wood (like Hazel or Ash): Identifiable in the cane with a lighter tone and natural rough texture along the shaft, preserving the “eyes” and original irregularities of the tree branch after peeling.
Excellent and varied set of 6 antique collection canes, made from different noble woods and crafted by hand. The lot includes canes with classic curved handles (hook) and one elegant cane with a "T"-shaped grip (Derby style). They are notable for their unique details, including carved geometric decorations and natural textures that highlight the wood grain.
Lot Details and Characteristics:
• Quantity: 6 canes.
• Material: Solid varied woods (including chestnut, treated cane/bamboo, and dark exotic woods).
• Handle Types:
• 5 canes with the classic curved handle (one with a very characteristic textured knot and another with a darkened rustic finish).
• 1 cane with an ergonomic "T"-shaped handle (Derby style) with a stylish gold-colored metal ring at the junction with the shaft.
• Decorative Elements: One of the principal pieces features an artistic wood carving with linear geometric patterns and decorative rings at the base of the shaft.
• Protection: Practically all pieces retain or have been fitted with black rubber ferrules at the base for protection and grip.
Dimensions and Condition:
• Length: The canes measure approximately 89 cm to 92 cm in total height (see the tape measure detail in the images).
• Condition: General good state of preservation (Used/Vintage). They show normal signs of use and the passage of time that give them a beautiful authentic patina. No major structural damages; the wood is firm and stable.
