Description from the seller
Large biscuit porcelain Christ figure and solid wood crucifix – Late 19th / Early 20th century
Impressive and captivating devotional crucifix dating from the end of the 19th century or the early 20th century, characterized by a refined figure of Christ in biscuit porcelain, mounted on a large solid wood cross with beautiful natural grain.
A piece with notable visual presence, combining the delicacy of porcelain biscuit sculpture with the solidity and warmth of wood, creating an elegant chromatic and tactile contrast.
The figure of Christ stands out for the accurate anatomical modeling, natural proportions, and extraordinary expressiveness of the reclined face, framed by a thick mane and a finely defined crown of thorns. Particularly appreciable is the rendering of the drapery knotted at the hips, with deep and realistic folds that testify to good artistic craftsmanship.
The biscuit surface, with its characteristic matte ivory finish, shows delicate grayish hues that accentuate the anatomical reliefs and give greater depth to the composition.
The large cross is made of solid wood, plausibly a resinous conifer, perhaps pine, with a striking and strongly marked grain and a warm brown finish. The ends of the arms are embellished with simple yet elegant shaped terminals, while at the top there is the traditional cartouche INRI.
Of particular interest is the contrast between the Christ, luminous and finely modeled, and the sober and vigorous wooden structure.
Overall dimensions: 81 × 40 × 10 cm.
The work is presented in good overall condition, with light signs of aging and wear compatible with its era, as documented by the photographs.
Interior design tips: Thanks to its prominent size and remarkable expressive force, this crucifix represents a decorative element of great charm, ideal for classic settings, historic houses, private studies, libraries, and sacred art collections. Particularly evocative also in contemporary spaces with an artful taste, where the contrast between dark wood and light biscuit can create a refined focal point.
An interesting example of devotional art between the 19th and 20th centuries, capable of combining spirituality, craftsmanship, and notable aesthetic impact.
The photographs constitute an integral part of the description and allow appreciation of the object’s features, details, and condition.
Shipping with careful professional packaging, performed according to art-handling and protection procedures, thanks to our specialized certification in Art Logistics.
