Description from the seller
Art Deco jardinière with fan-shaped frieze • marked 'RIO Tiel Holland' • ca. 1920–1935
An Art Deco jardinière made of metalware from RIO (Metaalwarenfabriek RIO) in Tiel, produced circa 1920–1935 and clearly marked on the base. Around the body runs a stamped frieze of scalloped ovals and fan-shaped rays on a punched ground. At the highest points the relief is worn to lighter brass, so the ornament stands out from the warm patina.
For this object there is also a Buy It Now price set, for those who want to acquire it immediately without waiting.
At a glance:
Material: brass, stamped sheet metal, patinated
Dimensions: h 17 x diameter 23 cm
Weight: 410 g
Mark: punched on the base, 'RIO' above a cartouche with 'TIEL' and 'HOLLAND' underneath
Dating: ca. 1920–1935
Provenance: collection of a Regency Modern interior pieces collector
Description and context:
Round body that tapers toward the base, with a wide, flared edge. The frieze lies between two pressed ribs. It shows elongated ovals with a scalloped edge and a diamond in the middle, connected by stepped blocks and fan-shaped rays. On the inside the frieze appears as a mirror image, a hallmark of punched sheet metal. The base has recessed rings around a flat central field bearing the mark. RIO was founded in 1910 in Tiel and, together with Daalderop and Kurz, was one of the metalware factories in the city.
Condition:
Good, with signs of use. Front: a few small dings from use. Exterior: uniform warm patina, worn at the relief points to lighter brass. Interior: dark oxidized, with a few small green oxidation spots at the edge and the frieze. Base: light scratches. No cracks, loose seams, or restorations observed. See the photos. Not intended for use with food; for a plant, use an inner pot.
In the interior:
A warm brass accent for a Regency Modern, Hollywood Regency, or Art Deco interior, with a water lily or palm on a sideboard or a windowsill. In raking light the fan frieze stands out sharply against the dark patina.
Shipping:
Professionally packed in a sturdy box with padding, and for fragile objects a double box. Always insured, shipped with Track & Trace. See feedback from previous buyers.
Attribution and sources:
Marked and thus certain: Metaalwarenfabriek RIO, Tiel. Tiel’s contemporaries KMD Daalderop and C. Kurz & Co used their own marks, and German sheet metal from WMF also falls under this mark. The dating rests on the Art Deco vormentaal of the frieze and on dated Rio metalwork from 1920–1930 in the collection of the Flipje en Streekmuseum Tiel.
