Silver coin of 917 thousandths, minted in Lisbon in 1899 during the reign of Carlos I of Portugal, one of the last monarchs of the Braganza dynasty. The obverse features an elegant portrait of the king facing to the right, by the engraver Venâncio Alves, in a realist style with careful modeling, highlighting the definition of facial features and hair. The reverse shows the national coat of arms of Portugal atop an ornate royal mantle, crowned by the monarch's crown, with the face value of 1000 Réis at the bottom. An example in excellent preserved condition, with well-defined relief, light circulation marks at the highest points and fields with a silvery tone and an attractive natural patina of golden and gray hues. It retains much of its original luster and presents notable minting quality, in line with its AU58 grade. A representative piece of the last monetary issues of the Portuguese monarchy, prior to the proclamation of the Republic in 1910.
